A 10-year-old Vaal boy has had the door close on him after the principal kicked him out on the first day of school.

This was after Khanyo Radebe was refused re-entry to Vaal Triangle Primary School in Vanderbijlpark, with the principal threatening legal action to keep the child out.

"We are going to engage our lawyer regarding the future of Khanyo in our school. The child has never been friendly," said headmistress C Steenberg yesterday. She would not give her full name.

Steenberg accused Khanyo of being problematic, disruptive and offensive and said she had filed a report about his behaviour. She said the school had given Khanyo a transfer card last year for him to look for another school for this academic year.

But it appears that Steenberg was angered after Khanyo's father, Tama Radebe, approached Sowetan.

"He betrayed my trust by contacting Sowetan. I can't afford to lose teachers because of one pupil who lacks respect," she said.

Radebe said he was shocked when his child was expelled.

"My son passed his Grade 5 well last year. I was hoping that he was going to continue in the same school this year."

He said the school could have at least informed him last year that they did not want his son back. Radebe said on only one occasion was he called to the school for his son allegedly calling a teacher a racist.

"My son can't spell that word. I don't believe he did that. It's an excuse to expel him," he said.
