How do I know if I qualify for an exemption?

How do I know if I qualify for an exemption?

Step 1: Calculate how much money you earn in a year before deductions (for both parents if they are supporting the child).

Step 2: Calculate how much money you have to pay on school fees a year for the most expensive child.

If the school fees is more than 10 percent of your income, you qualify for a total exemption.

If the fees is between 3,5 percent and 10 percent of your total gross annual income, you qualify for a partial exemption.

If the fees is 3 percent of your total income you do not qualify for any exemption, unless you have two or more children at the same government school or at another government school that has not been declared a no-fee school.

If the fees is 2,5 percent of your total income you do not qualify for any exemption unless you have four or more children at the same government school or at another government school that has not been declared a no-fee school.

If the fees is 2 percent of your total income you do not qualify for any exemption unless you have six or more children at the same government school or at another government school that has not been declared a no-fee school.

If the fees is lower than 2 percent you do not qualify for any exemption.

l How do I apply for an exemption?

Take your documents to the school. By law the school has to provide you with a fee exemption application form. Complete the application form. You can ask the school to help you if necessary. Return the application form to the school.

The school must make a decision in 30 days and inform you of that decision in seven days.

l What documents can I use to support my application?

Child Support Grant (CSG) card

Death certificates

Affidavit (A statement written by you and stamped by the police)

Make copies of your documents and get the police to stamp them. Do not give your original documents to the school.

l What if I don't have any documents?

The school must accept your child and you have a three- month period in which to provide the documents. You can show the school you have applied for documents by showing them a receipt and they have to accept this.
