The Gauteng education department has begun taking drastic steps against under-performing schools and teachers in line with the government's stance on improving learning.
Gauteng MEC for education Angie Motshekga said yesterday: "Last year we identified 139 under-performing schools. Of that number 100 came out of the danger zone and the remaining 39 have still not improved."
One of the schools that improved is Boitumelo High School in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni, which achieved a matric pass rate of 38 percent in 2007 and 74 percent last year.
Motshekga said though this was a positive sign, the schools that were their top performers fared badly last year.
The department's Albert Chanee said: "We will have a two-week period and 16 diagnostic teams, with three or four officials each, visit schools for quality assurance.
"We also want to ensure that learners are not pushed from grades 10 to 11."
He said the teams would spend three days at schools and a second team would be sent for a longer period.
Motshekga said: "Learners do not start underperforming in high school. If they get a good foundation in primary school they perform better in high school."
