'She used credit cards to steal cars'

A 45-year-old woman from Roodepoort has been arrested "for stealing five vehicles".

Police spokesman Inspector Mmakgomo Semono said that the woman was arrested after two car rental companies opened motor vehicle fraud and theft cases.

"The woman operated around Midrand. She used fraudulent credit cards and passports to obtain the vehicles," Semono said.

The woman never returned the vehicles.

Semono said a 39-year-old Nigerian national was also arrested in connection with the thefts.

"The woman handed the vehicles to a him. He supplied the woman with the fraudulent passports and credit cards that were used in the crimes."

He said the man would appear in court soon on charges of motor vehicle theft and fraud.

lIn Johannesburg, police arrested 253 people over the weekend, Gauteng police said yesterday.

Police spokesman Captain Bhekizizwe Mavundla said they were arrested during intensive anti-crime operations which focused on Hillbrow, Parktown, Berea and Joubert Park.

The operation began on Friday night and ended on Monday morning.

"The South African Police Services was not alone during the operations. The arrests were made with the help of community sector patrol groups," the police spokesman said.
