With the start of the school year tomorrow the education department expects a late rush to register at schools.

This despite having conducted a three-month registration campaign for first-time pupils last year. Parents were supposed to have registered their children by September.

Gauteng education department spokesman Nanagolo Leopeng said: "After our 10-day head count in 2008 a total of 169635 Grade 1 pupils were registered.

"According to the statistics we have at this stage 108336 Grade 1 pupils registered.

"A 10-day head count for 2009 will be done as soon as the schools reopen as we anticipate more pupils to be part of the late registration process."

He added that most schools had already been provided with stationery.
