Kwaito star Mandoza has made his first payment to the family of one of the men he killed in a car crash last year.

The 30-year-old musician's car, a black Chrysler Crossfire, smashed into the rear of a VW Jetta in which Charles Shabalala and Felix Thebe were travelling on March 1 2008. The two men died at the scene.

Mandoza, whose real name is Mduduzi Tshabalala, escaped with minor injuries.

Yesterday, Felix's brother Vusi confirmed that Mandoza had deposited R11500 into his mother's bank account.

"My mother is happy that the money was deposited before the due date. I don't really know Mandoza personally but I hope that he commits himself to paying the money every month."

In December, Mandoza pleaded guilty to two counts of culpable homicide in the Randburg magistrate's court. Magistrate Delize Smith sentenced him to four years' imprisonment, suspended for five years.

In addition, Mandoza was ordered to pay R10000 towards funeral expenses of each bereaved family by January 7.

He would also have to make monthly payments of R1500 to the Thebe family and R3000 to the Shabalala family for 24 months. By the end of the period, he would have paid R108000 to the families.

On the night of the crash Mandoza was returning from his mother's home in Pimville, Soweto, where he had dropped off his wife Mpho, and then drove to Kempton Park for the Mzansi Awards after-party.

Shabalala and Thebe were driving home from work when the accident occurred near the Maraisburg offramp along the N1 about 1.23am.

Mandoza has said the accident had left him traumatised and it wouldhaunt him for the rest of his life.
