An 18-year-old girl who allegedly killed her father was arrested on the eve of her father's funeral.

Sowetan has learnt that Maria Sebona was re-arrested on Friday, a week of being released from a place of safety. Police spokesman Inspector Brian Dlamini confirmed Sebona's arrest last night.

"She will appear in the Brits magistrate's court today," Dlamini said. She will officially be charged with murder.

On Saturday her father Freddy Sebona was laid to rest in Majakaneng in Brits, North West.

Mourners were shocked when Maria's note accompanying the wreath was read out. "Rest in peace father, I love you, from your daughter Maria," read the message.

Mourners who attended the funeral described him as a man who wanted to bring change in the village.

"If Maria was brought up well we would not have gathered here today. She used to insult her father in full view of neighbours and friends," Freddy's close friend Oupa Tshoeu told mourners.

Tshoeu pleaded with parents to instill good morals and discipline in their children. "As residents we are not going to sit and fold our arms while we are killed by our children."

Maria allegedly stabbed her father after he gave her a hiding for stabbing their neighbour Mpho Mohlanne with a broken bottle.

Maria then feigned unconsciousness, stood up, and stands accused of stabbing her father with a butcher's knife.

Sebola died ten days later in hospital.
