KwaZulu-Natal's agriculture MEC Mtholephi Mthimkhulu wants food prices to drop because the cost of petrol has dropped.

The fuel price dropped by R1,65 a litre on Tuesday night. Mthimkhulu said petrol price hikes over the past two years had been blamed for pushing up the price of food and basic necessities.

Now Mthimkulu wants the price of food to drop.

"The industry should follow suit and drop the price of food and other basic necessities," he said.
