Such a display of self-satisfaction by the departing head of an African country seemed an oddity on a continent characterised by a history of dictators and regimes with an insatiable appetite for lifetime power.

Being the first sub-Saharan African nation to achieve independence, Ghana has shown how a regime change can happen peacefully without bloodletting and coups.

Like South Africa, Ghana now proudly stands as a paragon of the values of the African renaissance.
