Despite small glitches experienced here and there, the fact that at first attempt the outcomes of the Class of 2008 almost equalled last year's results must make it awkward for doomsayers and Freedom Charter denialists to do business as usual.
The results, announced on Tuesday by Education Minister Naledi Pandor, were a historic achievement. These were the first set of examinations to be written by pupils from all races, backgrounds and school types.
Pandor said: "The new curriculum is designed to participate in a changing 21st century world and capacitates citizens to participate meaningfully in the economic growth and social development of South Africa. Therefore, constitutional and human rights principles are ingrained in the outcomes of the new curriculum."
People will remember that these principles in the Freedom Charter, which states: "Education shall be free, compulsory, universal and equal for all children."
The ANC is adamant to "open the doors of learning and culture" and is unswerving to ensure that South Africa's' children are equal before its supreme law, the country's Constitution.
By the way despite the delivery of 2, 6 million odd house to the poor, and thus giving dignity to people who otherwise would not have "houses, security and comfort," without a shred of evidence, purveyors of mistruths accuse the ANC of deviating from its sacrosanct guiding document - the Freedom Charter. Why this false persists despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary?
