December is synonymous with a blitz of household robberies and insurance companies said most of the claims they receive are for electronic equipment.

Karen Miller, a general manager at Zurich Insurance Company, said yesterday: "Besides it being early in the month, we have already received a lot of claims for household robberies which occurred in December.

"Zurich SA's experience has been that small electronic devices are the favoured stolen items, such as DVD cameras, cellphones and CD players," she said.

Besides electronics, the most commonly stolen items are expensive jewellery, followed by furniture, clothing, expensive rugs, curtains, mirrors and gardening tools.

The festive season usually makes January and February a busy time for most insurance companies as they refund their clients for the stolen goods.
