Little Tshepang Matabane is counting "sleeps" until she can wear her uniform and officially start school on January 14.
She happily posed for Sowetan while we asked her mother about her green uniform and her preparedness for school.
She knows that she is going to attend Theo Wassenaar Primary School in Booysens. Her mother, Lulama Matabane, said the two had already been through orientation and were given stationery for the year.
"The school is nearby and they have three Grade 1 classes with small numbers. I will pay R250 a month for transport because it is across a busy main street. Tshepang will come back at lunch time and will be looked after by her granny except when she has extramural classes," Matabane said.
Tshepang's uniform consists of green dungarees that cost R160, shoes R120, socks R22, jersey R100 and a school bag that costs R120.
Matabane has to buy a Friday uniform consisting of shorts, a T-shirt with the school badge and takkies. In April the school will change to a winter uniform of long pants, long sleeved shirt, long socks and a dry mac.
This means Tshepang's school attire will amount to about R1000 a year.
"Tshepang is very excited to be going to school. She takes out her uniform every day and counts how many 'sleeps' before she can start at school," Matabane said.
