Moalusi Rapuleng was the first person to pass matric in his family and was going to be the first one to go to university but yesterday he was buried in Orlando East, Soweto.
Family spokesman Nteboheng Hlake said that Moalusi, 17, died before knowing that he had passed matric with a university entry.
"He carried the hope and was the pride of the family. He was the first person to pass matric in the family and was going to be the first to go to college," Hlake said.
She said that Moalusi had received a bursary to study travel and tourism at Rosebank College.
"He was a quiet person who loved education. He taught other children maths when he was not studying."
Hlake said Moalusi's mutilated body was found by his father, Herbert, on January 3 at a government mortuary. He had been shot and hacked to death.
The teenager had attended Selelekela Secondary School in Orlando East. He was last seen sitting under a tree at his home talking to a friend on Christmas Eve.
Unconfirmed reports say that 13 young males have been killed in the area in similar circumstances over the past few years. One of them was Moalusi's neighbour who was killed by "a friend" who has since been jailed for the murder.
Orlando police spokesman Nomvula Mbense said that the police were investigating a case of murder.
