Not too late to end war

Whatever the rationale behind the current conflagration in the Gaza Strip, the needlessness of war must be particularly apparent to all witnessing the tragedy unfolding in the Middle East.

Whatever the rationale behind the current conflagration in the Gaza Strip, the needlessness of war must be particularly apparent to all witnessing the tragedy unfolding in the Middle East.

For many who believe in disarmament there can be no greater testament to the grim reality of war.

The rising number of casualties in the bloodbath underscores human suffering typically precipitated by war as witnessed in the ongoing bloody fighting between Israeli and Islamic militants, which has maimed and claimed the lives of hundreds in the Gaza Strip.

Though wars have dogged humankind since time immemorial, there is still nothing that prepares us for their savagery and often their irrationality. No amount of justification can mitigate the horrors of war with its trail of death and destruction.

Wars remain an anachronistic blight on civilisation. They relentlessly dog our times though dialogue inherently offers less pyrrhic results than warring.

Most disturbing is that wars tend to induce humanity to act in the most inhumane way towards its kind.

While the complexities of Middle East politics invariably conjure up a minefield of intricacies, it is not too late for the world's powerful nations to force the warring parties into a ceasefire.
