The DA has called on the minister Justice, Enver Surty, to open to the public the investigation into the "unbecoming behaviour" of Justice director-general Menzi Simelane, pictured.
"Reports that the Department of Justice is considering interviewing Simelane in camera about his alleged dishonesty during the Ginwala Commission into Vusi Pikoli's fitness to hold office are cause for great concern, particularly considering that his interference in the case against suspended national police commissioner Jackie Selebi was found by the commission to be tantamount to executive interference with the independence of the National Prosecuting Authority," said the DA's Len Joubert yesterday.
The investigation into Simelane's conduct follows the finding by the Ginwala Commission that he was "dishonest" and "reckless" in his submissions and in his interactions with the head of the NPA. The commission also found that Simelane had misled then Justice minister Brigitte Mabandla.
The commission was set up after former president Thabo Mbeki suspended Pikoli, citing the breakdown of the relationship between Pikoli and Mabandla.
Mbeki then instituted the commission to investigate Pikoli's fitness to hold office.
Pikoli has since been fired.
