Search parties, including police and sangomas, have failed to locate the body of a woman who drowned in the Kaal River in Ivory Park on New Year's Eve.
Yesterday police suspended the search for Shadi Kgaladi's body until tomorrow.
For four days police divers, sniffer dogs and emergency personnel have combed the river banks in search of the 34-year-old mother, but without any success.
Kgaladi, of Moeti in Tembisa, and her niece Nomvuyo Monageng, 3, of Ivory Park, were swept away on New Year's Eve by a strong current in the storm water drain and thrown into the Kaal River.
Nomvuyo's bruised body was found on Friday, a kilometre from where the two had drowned .
Police spokesman Captain Evert Grobler said yesterday that about 9km of the river had been covered during the search operation.
"We are hoping that by Wednesday [tomorrow] the body will have decomposed, making it easier for the sniffer dogs to trace it," he said.
Kgaladi and Nomvuyo have not been the only victims of the storm water drains and the Kaal River. Local councillor Petros Zitha told Sowetan that seven other people had drowned in the river since 2005.
Zitha said that two pedestrian bridges were constructed after the first two incidents. The bridges were opened in July last year.
