The Education Department has promised that matric pupils who did not receive their results last week will get them before the reopening of institutions of higher learning this year.
The results of 56000 matric pupils - nearly 10percent of the 589912-strong class of 2008 - were excluded from those released last week because of various irregularities.
The group was the first to write matric under the controversial outcomes-based National Curriculum Statement.
The delayed results are expected to alter the national 62,5percent pass rate.
The delay was caused by a combination of factors; and at least 700 irregularities indicated pupils had cheated in some way.
Education Department spokesman Lunga Ngqengelele said: "When institutions of higher learning reopen all pupils will have their results.
"With some subjects like music, schools had to send results to the department and combine those with the exam marks. Some schools did not filter them to the department."
He said that an investigation into the matter was still being conducted.
The DA said Education Minister Naledi Pandor should conduct an independent inquiry into the results.
The party's deputy spokesman on education, Desiree van der Walt, said: "On the surface, the results suggest our education system is improving . but there is a growing number of questions about the extent to which they are in fact only smoke and mirrors.
"The department's failure to release more than 10percent of the results is indicative of astonishing administrative failures which cannot go uninvestigated."
