Motlanthe guards seize tape

The presidency's VIP protection unit confiscated equipment from an SABC crew during a scuffle on the N12 outside Johannesburg, the broadcaster said yesterday.

The presidency's VIP protection unit confiscated equipment from an SABC crew during a scuffle on the N12 outside Johannesburg, the broadcaster said yesterday.

President Kgalema Motlanthe's motorcade was involved in an accident on the highway, east of Johannesburg on Saturday. A VW Golf apparently collided with a car in the president's convoy. Motlanthe was unhurt.

When SABC journalists arrived, their footage was confiscated.

SABC head of news, Snuki Zikalala, said: "The presidency has assured us the material will be returned."

Police spokesman Director Sally de Beer confirmed that a tape was confiscated for security reasons.

"The VIP protection unit had their reasons for confiscating the tape. Every agency in the world has measures to protect the president," said De Beer.

She said she would personally deliver the tape to the SABC offices today.

De Beer said what happened on Saturday would not necessarily happen every time a VIP or minister was involved in an accident. - Luzuko Pongoma and Sapa
