Happy new year wishes

The start of a new year comes with a renewed belief that we have another shot at life and at righting the wrongs of the previous year. The making of New Year's resolutions speak to this desire by all of us to reflect on where we might have gone wrong and to make the necessary corrections.

The start of a new year comes with a renewed belief that we have another shot at life and at righting the wrongs of the previous year. The making of New Year's resolutions speak to this desire by all of us to reflect on where we might have gone wrong and to make the necessary corrections.

It is in this spirit that today you have in your hands an edition that attempts to help you navigate what promises to be one of the most interesting years, locally and internationally, of this young millennia.

On the political front, the emergence of Cope will make this year's elections the most eagerly awaited since we became a democracy. The greater challenge for the electorate and political parties will be to ensure that we have a peaceful and credible election.

The Confederations Cup in June will be a trial run for our readiness to host sport's greatest spectacle, the Fifa World Cup.

Things are not all rosy.

The world is facing its most severe economic downturn since the Great Depression of 1929-1933. Though we in South Africa are relatively insulated, the impact on our economy will be felt sooner rather than later.

But we remain confident that the resourcefulness of South Africans will see us through a difficult year and that we shall at the end of it say all things considered, it was a tough, but a happy year.
