Shepard Mthokozisi was elated when he scooped distinctions in IsiZulu, maths and life orientation.

The 17-year-old, who goes to the Johannesburg Polytech Institute, was overjoyed after glancing at his matric statement yesterday. "I did not have all the required books, let alone a good place to study. It was tough," he said.

Mthokozisi, who lives with his father in Joubert Park, says he had to do without entertainment.

"Hard work, time management and support from my father helped me a lot. There were days when I had to put in extra hours in order to make up for time lost during Telkom's load-shedding."

He intends securing a bursary to study civil engineering at Wits University.
