Opposition parties will lose more members to the Congress of the People than the ANC, political analyst Protas Madlala told Sowetan.

"The ANC is not the only party to have lost to Cope," he said this week.

Madlala said defections from the ANC to Cope were "constant" but had reached "some semblance of stability". The defectors were mainly known "Thabo Mbeki supporters and leaders".

But "if I were an opposition party I would be really worried". He attributed the loss of members to the new political kid on the block to the "proliferation" of opposition parties.

"Opposition politics in this country is about self-serving individuals. They are each offering the same product but in different words. It is akin to them running a small business for self-enrichment and self-interest.

"To succeed opposition parties should have gone the route of consolidation and coalition and less self-interest. Clearly there will be new parties on the political horison but this will be more for the IEC subsidy as opposed to serving the interest of the people."

He said there would be no surprises in next year's election: "The outcome is predictable. It is just a matter of what percentage the ruling party will win by."
