When ex-WBU champion Jan Bergman's fiancée went visiting on Christmas Day, the boxer thought she would not be coming back until Sunday, and so he decided to go for plan B.

But Mary Bergman and their two children returned unannounced and used spare keys to get into their Observatory home in Johannesburg.

A few minutes later the former hard-hitting boxer, who was scarcely conscious of his family's presence, rocked up with two women. They were both armed with overnight bags.

When Mary refused to let the lasses in, the boxer allegedly turned the house into a boxing ring.

According to Mary, the couple have been having fights for some time.

Her statement to the police reads in part: "I told him that we were going to visit my cousin in Sandton because we had been fighting a lot... I decided to come back the next day. While I was preparing food he came with some ladies ... He was hugging one of them."

All hell broke loose when Mary questioned him about his company.

She went on: "I told him that they were not going to sleep in our house, but he insisted that I must leave because they wanted to sleep. He pushed me against the glass door and I got cut on my right arm."

Their children, aged five and nine, phoned the Yeoville police and Bergman was arrested.

He was locked up at the Hillbrow police holding cells and charged with assault.

During yesterday's hearing in the Hillbrow magistrate's court, the prosecutor opposed bail, but this was granted after Bergman's lawyer, Nomnotho Mazibuko, said arrangements had been made for him to stay with fellow boxer Lehlohonolo Ledwaba.

The couple were engaged in 2001.

Mary told Sowetan that she was traumatised.

"When I asked him about the two women, he claimed that they were his sisters. But I know all his sisters."

Mazibuko refused to comment. The case was postponed to next month.
