Khabo Zondo, below, the coach of Absa Premiership upstarts Bay United, hopes to beef up his striking department in order for them to compete in the second round.

Zondo and management at the struggling Eastern Cape club are already back at work looking for potential reinforcement to sign during the January registration window period.

The astute Zondo who stated that his major task was to see the side moving away from the dreaded relegation zone, hopes to announce the new signees next week.

"We're lacking upfront and we'll use the window period to get the players we need. We resume training on Saturday and our aim is to collect a minimum of five points from our opening three matches for a start.

"If we achieve that feat we'll then double our efforts to take the team to the top. Although it will not be that easy, we're determined to retain our elite league status next season."

He said they were also looking to acquire a central defender and an attacking midfielder.

In his first game at United, Zondo saw his side holding Bloemfontein Celtic to a 1-all draw at home. They held Kaizer Chiefs to a 3-3 draw away, lost 1-0 to SuperSport United at home and then registered their first win 2-1 against Lamontville Golden Arrows away.

Wash' Umlilo's boss, Sipho Pityana is optimistic that they will evade the relegation axe this season. He also believes that Zondo will bring some results and smiles on the supporters's faces next year.

" Zondo has brought stability to the team and our major focus next year is to collect more points. We have what it takes to remain in the elite league and everybody is determined to see Bay United retaining their league status," he said.

Bay United will host Bidvest Wits in their opening game of the year at the EPRU on January 10.
