Striptease, once taboo among township residents who saw it only as entertainment for immoral people in the suburbs, is now in the heart of Soweto.

In Mkhize Street, Jabulani, a new entertainment joint - Emarenkeni - that provides adults-only entertainment. The strip shows on Thursday nights rock with the nude girls taking it all off on stage.

They swing from the pole, get male patrons on stage and touching is allowed.

On arrival one is greeted by ladies who collect R30 cover charge at the door. Then bouncers conduct thorough searches before letting you in. Inside, the disc jockey spins all the latest vinyls of house tunes.

There is a notice on the wall warning patrons not to touch strippers unless "it is with the permission of the lady on stage" or if you are prepared to make a donation of anything between R10 and R100.

Men and women frequent the place, some men even bring their partners along. Three strippers - one at a time - take to the stage to strip down to their birthday suits.

In one of the scenes, the stripper who intended to offer a sex show with a patron left the stage disappointed. Four of the men she had picked up from the audience could not rise up to the occasion.

To end the show, which lasted for about four hours, bouncers had to use force to get the strippers off the stage as patrons could not get enough of the touching session.

Asked how he started the strip club, owner Lindokuhle Dlamini said: "I wanted to open a bar, but I knew there was a lot of competition in the township. I thought of something unique.

"Some older men often request private shows because they are embarrassed to attend the regular shows in the presence of young people."

Dlamini said he got the strippers from agencies and was paying each girl R500 for a show. He said the strippers were from outside Gauteng.
