A Limpopo police constable who was run over by a speeding blue light car transporting a politician has been admitted to hospital.

On Monday Constable Khathutshelo Ramabenyane of the crime-prevention unit in Musina was knocked over on the N1 between Musina and the Beitbridge border post.

He was directing cars transporting roads and transport MEC Cassel Mathale and his entourage.

Ramabenyane had stepped into the middle of the road to prevent other motorists from using the road and to allow the government cars to pass when one of the cars knocked him down.

Traffic came to a standstill while paramedics attended to the policeman before taking him to Musina Hospital. Ramabenyane sustained injuries to his head and leg.

The MEC and his entourage were on their way to an ANC function at Rwanda Township near Musina to distribute food parcels.

Mathale said they had planned a function for 30 poor families as part of the ANC's humanitarian programme.

"We would have liked to distribute food parcels to all needy people in the province if we had the money. We have asked our local branches to help too," he said.

Musina police spokesman Sydney Ringane yesterday said that a reckless and negligent driving case had been opened against the driver of the government car.
