Disgruntled members of the SA Democratic Teachers' Union in Limpopo are set to resign today to form a "new union which will be apolitical".
The group of teachers has expressed their dissatisfaction with Sadtu and follows allegations that the current Sadtu leadership was "dictatorial and victimised" those who opposed them.
According to a letter circulating in Polokwane, the teachers have indicated that there was a lack of consultation in decision making by the current leadership of the union.
"And such decisions are taken at our expense," read the letter, which has been signed by Phochane Sekgotla and Charles Seala, well-known Sadtu activists in the province.
Though they would not be drawn into revealing more about the new body, it is believed the new union would be aligned to the Congress of the People. It is alleged that the proposed union's first meeting would be addressed by former Sadtu and Cosatu president Willie Madisha. The meeting is scheduled to take place in Polokwane.
"We are still in the plenary stages. We will consult other equally disgruntled Sadtu members," said Sekgotla yesterday.
"We know what we want in a union. Sadtu has not been providing us with leadership, hence our decision to form a new union. We are not going to say much now. We want this meeting first," he said.
Several efforts to get George Modumela, Sadtu's provincial chairman, and his executive to comment drew a blank yesterday.
But Madisha, who was in Limpopo yesterday to prepare for the meeting, said he was looking forward to the formation of the new union.
