The former Silver Stars and Orlando Pirates coach replaces Mich D'Avray who has been appointed to head Phunya SeleSele's new technical department and academy.
Da Gama begins his duties on December 30.
This was confirmed yesterday by Celtic's chief executive Ikie Augousti, who said: "We felt this was the right time and Da Gama was the right person to coach Celtic and get us out of relegation trouble.
"However, there is no way we were prepared to lose D'Avray. Mich has far too much expertise and experience that will help the club in the long term. Things have simply not worked out for him and the players on the pitch due to a lot of reasons and we needed to make changes."
Augousti added: "Getting Celtic away from relegation is part of our deal with Da Gama."
Celtic have won only two of their 14 Absa Premiership fixtures this season and are bottom of the table with 11 points - one point behind Bay United.
D'Avray said he was happy with the new arrangement.
Apart from sourcing and bringing in new players D'Avray will head Celtic's new academy venture with Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon. - Sapa
