At least 17 people died and 56 more were injured on South African roads this weekend. Free State had the highest number of fatalities at nine.
In the first incident, Tersia Alana Muller, 27, died after she lost control of her car and hit a pole on Friday. She died on the scene.
On Saturday, a Toyota Venture collided with a Toyota Hi-Ace in Rouxville. "Four passengers in the Venture died on the scene. In the Hi-Ace four passengers also died on the scene," said police spokesman Superintendent Motantsi Makhele.
Twenty passengers from both vehicles who survived were taken to hospital. Five people were killed and several were injured when a bus crashed near Umkomaas in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday.
Three people died in a multi-vehicle accident in Hemlock near Ngodwana in Mpumalanga on Friday.
Transport spokesman David Nkambule said a trailer pulled by a bakkie overturned and was hit by a taxi. A truck then collided with the taxi and the overturned trailer.
The driver and a passenger from the taxi and another passenger from the bakkie died instantly. Two seriously injured taxi passengers were airlifted to hospital.
A 20-year-old man was seriously injured after he tried to avoid a taxi in front of him and crashed on the R512 highway near Lanseria, Johannesburg, said ER24 on Saturday.
The man lost control and hit a pole, overturning several times. He was flung out of the vehicle and sustained multiple head and chest injuries.
In Cape Town, one person died and three others were injured after a car accident on the N2 towards Cape Town yesterday. ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said paramedics found a bakkie and a Toyota Corolla down an embankment in the early hours of the morning.
"Both vehicles went down the embankment and rolled several times before stopping inside a ditch."
Paramedics found the driver of the bakkie trapped in his vehicle. It took an hour to free him but he was declared dead on the scene.
