Mayor of Greater Letaba municipality Joshua Matlou has been assigned two bodyguards by the police to protect him during and after the festive season.

Police spokesman Inspector Freddy Maenetja confirmed yesterday that two armed guards from the SAPS had been dispatched to guard Matlou.

The arrangement comes after Matlou was subjected to harassment by anonymous callers who demanded that he give them R20000 or face being killed.

The measures come after the police arrested two men suspected of being behind the threats.

The two men, Sello Kutane, 19, and Elvis Thapelo Mahlahla, 18, are facing charges of intimidation and were each granted R1000 bail.
