A Limpopo mayor has come out from self-imposed hiding - after three weeks of living in fear.

Joshua Matlou, mayor of the Greater Letaba municipality, went into hiding after receiving anonymous death threats.

The former ANC Youth League provincial chairman surfaced after police officers arrested two suspects who police say demanded R200000 from Matlou - or else.

A visibly relieved Matlou said he could now look forward "to enjoying the festive season".

The suspects were arrested at the weekend after police traced them through their cellphone network, Captain Freddy Maenetja said.
