Scooby the cop dog foils robbery
Police dog Scooby has been commended for tracking down two suspects carrying a refrigerator full of appliances and jewellery they had stolen from a house in Highland Hills near Pinetown on Saturday.
Two suspects broke into the house in the early hours of the morning and entered it through the kitchen door.
The owner of the house was away on holiday when the incident happened.
The kitchen door burglar bars were forced in and the door ripped out, and the house was ransacked - furniture was broken, jewellery, clothing, electrical appliances were stolen and loaded into a refrigerator.
Police spokesman Solomon Mbhele said the suspects then carried the refrigerator over the fence, down the valley, up a hill and through the bushes, not knowing that the police had at the time already been notified of the housebreaking.
"Members of the SAPS with the help of the dog unit noticed the trail with the help of Scooby, who followed the spoor for about two kilometres and the two suspects were nabbed still carrying the fridge in the bush. The stolen items were recovered and the two suspects, aged 22 and 28, will be charged with housebreaking," he said.
Meanwhile, a 38-year-old man is expected to appear in a Pietermaritzburg court today for allegedly shooting his girlfriend to death.
The woman, identified as Zanele Bongi Gwala, 35, was found lying on the pavement in the centre of the city.
