Joburg bus commuters left stranded

Commuters have been left stranded after Johannesburg Metro Bus reduced the number of buses to take them to work due to lower demand this holiday period.

An angry commuter who asked to remain anonymous called Sowetan yesterday to complain that she and other commuters had to find their way to work on Monday when their bus did not arrive.

She said she had bought a monthly ticket to travel from Pimville in Soweto to Fourways, northwest of Joburg.

"We had to walk in order to connect with another bus at Bara instead of travelling straight to Fourways as usual. When we bought the tickets at the beginning of the month they did not bother to notify us so that we could make alternative arrangements.

"When I called their offices I was told buses had been cut for the festive season. We don't know what is going to happen tomorrow (today). Their service is poor by any standards."

Metro Bus spokesman Jeff Ngcobo said they had reduced the number of buses in areas where the demand was less.
