The University of Pretoria has assured AmaTuks Football Club, the National First Division inland stream's log leaders, that they will continue backing them amid rumours that the club is facing a financial crisis.

University's executive director, Professor Antonie de Klerk yesterday said: "The university is proud of AmaTuks and fully supports them financially and otherwise."

AmaTuks lead the log with 19 points from a possible 33 and have found the net 15 times. They are a point ahead of second placed Cosmos and third placed Winners Park.

AmaTuks were established in 2000 and have produced more than 10 players for the Absa Premiership: Lerato Chabangu, Dumisani Masilele, George Maluleka, Robyn Johannes, Bongani Khumalo, Masibusane Zongo, Clifford Mulenga, Davis Nkausu, Goodman Sauhatsi and Gordon Gilbert.

The club's coach Steve Barker, who took over the reins after Sammy Troughton joined Free State Stars and recently Mpumalanga Black Aces, said the club appreciates the university's financial backing.

"To pay them back for their support, we will do all that is possible to ensure that we stay at the top until the end of the season. We are looking forward to signing an international player who will strengthen our striking force." said Barker.

AmaTuks host Jomo Cosmos in the Nedbank preliminary round tomorrow at the university's stadium. The two teams failed to produce a winner in their last two league matches.
