SADC should quickly resolve Zim impasse

The socio-political plight of our brothers and sisters in Zimbabwe is a grave matter that requires extraordinary measures of intervention.

The socio-political plight of our brothers and sisters in Zimbabwe is a grave matter that requires extraordinary measures of intervention.

The political stalemate, a product of recalcitrance on the part of Zanu-PF and the one-upmanship that characterises the MDC attitude, has increased the gravity of the matter and continues to delay intervention programmes and aid from outside.

The worsening health situation and the cholera epidemic in that country are beginning to threaten the whole southern African region.

One tends to perceive the need for the SADC to appoint an aid administrator in Zimbabwe.

Such an appointment would make it possible for the country to implement intervention programmes and to be responsible for the administration of aid funds, which cannot be used before a political solution is reached.

It is unacceptable that ordinary citizens of Zimbabwe should become pawns in the power games between ZanuPF and the MDC.

The appointment of an aid administrator should be seen as an interim measure, which will help alleviate Zimbabwe's plight without undermining its sovereignty and independence.

The intervention will also put pressure on the involved parties to move with speed towards resolving the impasse.

General Secretary, BCP
