The Literary Translators Award was added to the South African Literary Awards.

Sowetan, Nutrend Publishers, the Arts and Culture Department and wRite Associates have formed a nation-building partnership that encourages entries, adjudicates submitted works and awards writers.

Njabulo Ndebele won the K Sello Duiker Memorial Literary Award for Fine Lines From The Box. Runners-up are Tlou Setumu for the Sepedi Ntwa Ya Kgosi Malebogo Le Maburu and Willem Anker for the Afrikaans Siegfried.

The Literary Posthumous Award winners are Dora Taylor for Kathie; AHM Scholtz for Vatmaar, A Place Called Vatmaar and Afdraai and Sheila Cussons for the Afrikaans anthology, Versamelde Gedigte.

Literary Lifetime Achievement Award winners are DM Modise for the Setswana drama Magagana, WMRSigwavhulimu for Tshivenda poetry book Mirunzi Ya Vhuvha, Elsa Joubert for Wonderlike Geweld, Swerfjare Van Poppie Nongena and Klassieke Reeks: Ons Wag Op Die Kaptein, Adam Small for Krism Van Map Jacobs, W Stockenstrom for Die Kremetartespedisie, Luli Calinicosfor The World That Made Mandela and Miriam Makeba and Nomsa Mwamuka for Makeba - the Makeba Story. Chris van Wyk won the Literary Translators Award for Vatmaar. His runners-up are Elisa Silke for To Hell With Cronje and Michael Heyns for Agaat.
