Gauteng police have finally arrested the man believed to be behind the scourge of taxi violence in Johannesburg.

Bree Street taxi rank manager Raymond Nzima was arrested on Monday by the Cleveland police.

Nzima appeared in the Johannesburg magistrate's court and is expected back in court on Wednesday.

He faces charges of murder and attempted murder.

Inspector Sanku Tsunke said: "The man has only two cases pending against him. The other one is already in the high court. It has been postponed to next July.

"On Wednesday he will appear for a formal bail application."

Nzima is in police custody and his cases are being investigated by the organised crime unit.

Tsunke refused to comment on allegations by Faraday Taxi Association's Breeze Dlamini that Nzima had some of his cases squashed by corrupt officials within the Germiston taxi violence unit. Dlamini has repeated his allegation against Nzima.
