Congress of the People leader Mosiuoa Lekota says a law will be passed banning public servants from joining unions affiliated to political parties - if his party wins the elections next year.
Lekota also said that his party (Cope) would give the African National Congress (ANC) a run for its money next year.
Cope says that it has 480000 members.
"In all the years I was in the ANC the highest number of paid-up members we had was about 600000. So to have this membership in just more than a month must tell a story of its own," Lekota said.
He said the public service had to be "depoliticised".
Lekota said: "Public servants can't be affiliated to a political party.
"That's why when Tony Yengeni was arrested, another policeman said, 'He's my comrade, change the time so he can go out'. How can you fight crime with a divided police force?" Lekota asked.
