Dozens of families living in Harmony Hof on Saratoga Street in Berea have been out in the cold and rain for two weeks.

This after they were evicted without warning by the sheriff and police on November 28.

"We were not even given a chance to get our things together," said Alvin Louw, who claimed that some of his his goods were stolen through the back entrance of the building.

"We just got out what we could carry at the time.

"My wife found our bed being sold for R50 on the street."

Cate Mamabolo, a mother of two young boys, said: "It has been a painful week. We don't have water and toilets, which makes life really difficult.

"All I have is my mattress and blankets and clothes. Most of us, including myself, have lost our personal documents - bank cards, identity documents, children's certificates and even our money since we had just been paid."

Some of the people who were evicted were looking for alternative accommodation while others were at the Johannesburg high court seeking some respite when Sowetan arrived on the scene.

Their application in the high court was unsuccessful and they are now contemplating leave to appeal.
