A dark cloud is hanging over Motse Maria, a Catholic missionary school in GaMashashane village, northwest of Polokwane.

Though the 2008 end-of-year results have not yet been released, there is already uncertainty among pupils who wrote the final examinations.

This comes after the controversial appointment of a teacher of English as acting principal last week.

Sowetan is in possession of two documents recently drawn up by angry pupils - and by concerned members of the school governing body.

One of the documents, drawn up by the pupils, says in part: "Our English teacher did not bother to teach us this year.

"During the second team (sic) we went to him and asked for our scripts to make sure that they were correct, but he refused and told us that the marks were from the essays, which we didn't even submit."

In response to the pupils' grievances the chairman of the school's governing body, Mothabi Malefo, wrote: "We have received your complaint and we are deeply concerned.

"We view this matter in a serious light because other classes have also complained about the teacher in question."
