The IFP's nomination of its president Mangosuthu Buthelezi as its leader in next year's elections has been described as "an elevation of something that has failed".
The announcement was made yesterday at the Durban City Hall.
"Why consider something that has failed in the past? Buthelezi has been their presidential candidate since 2004 and has failed. So why consider him again?" political analyst Zakhele Ndlovu asked.
Ndlovu, however, praised the IFP for nominating national chairman, Zanele Magwaza-Msibi, as its candidate for the premiership of KwaZulu-Natal. Magwaza-Msibi is also the Zulu-land district mayor.
"She is definitely the right person for the job. She has gained experience as mayor of one of the biggest districts in the province. Also, she is young and a woman. Young women would definitely look up to her. She is someone they can identify with," said Ndlovu.
Accepting her nomination, Magwaza-Msibi, 46, said this was the chance the IFP was waiting for to reclaim the province and change the lives of poor people. She promised to provide every child with free education up to Grade 12.
"The people of KwaZulu-Natal have had enough of lies, deceit, nepotism and cronyism. We say no more to incompetence and mismanagement," she said.
Buthelezi told delegates that the country had reached a stage where the dividing line between the ruling party and the state has, to all intents and purposes, collapsed.
