Eldorado Park, Soweto, police yesterday busted a bakkie loaded with 4140 different kinds of cigarette packets.

A 46-year-old man was arrested while his accomplice escaped.

Police spokesman Philemon Khorombi said police were patrolling the area when the bakkie whizzed past at high speed on the corner of Cavendish and Union streets.

"The police tried to stop it but the driver sped away," he said.

Khorombi said the police became suspicious because though the bakkie had a canopy, there was something covered with duvets inside.

He said the police gave chase but the two men would not stop until they abandoned their car near the Kliptown railway station and tried to flee.

Packets confiscated consisted of 19 different kinds of popular brands ...

"The value of the cigarettes is estimated at R82000," Khorombi said.

The man was charged with possession of stolen goods and is expected to appear in the Protea magistrate's court soon.

He said the packets confiscated consisted of 19 different kinds of popular brands, including Peter Stuyvesant, Rothmans, Dunhill, Mills, Marlboro and Craven A.

Khorombi issued a stern warning to other criminals that they should abstain from crime if they did not want to spend Christmas behind bars.
