"South African women want 50 percent representation in political and public administration decision-making positions before the next elections," said minister in the presidency Manto Tshabalala-Msimang.
She was speaking at a press briefing at Burger Park Hotel in Pretoria. The briefing came after a consultative meeting of the National Gender Machinery to access and formulate a strategy to support various stakeholders focusing on women and governance held on Saturday.
Among those who attended the meeting were women in government, civil society and delegates from Ethiopia who were visiting the country on a study tour on how SA women are addressing gender imbalances.
"Although the proportion of women has increased significantly since 1994, a number of national and provincial departments have made little or no progress," she said
Women and government programme manager for the Gender Advocacy Programme, Claire Mathonsi, said: "Women issues should not be seen as election debate only to garner votes. Political parties talk about majority of women in their parties but we find that those women are on the ground and poor."
