Top runner Donald Mathipa came back from injury in style to win the Ekurhuleni Half Marathon in Katlehong at the weekend.

Mathipa, who ran in the colours of Powerade Athletic Club, breasted the tape in 1hr:8min:41sec.

He was closely followed by Wesley Ruto from Kenya in 1:09:33 while his compatriot Isaac Kosgei came third, five seconds later (1:09:38).

Mathipa picked up a hamstring injury during the taxing Soweto Marathon at Elkah Stadium, Rockville, last month and has been out of action since then.

"I am quite chuffed to be back on the road once more and a win was a great motivator ahead of the South African Championships set for Durban early next year," he said.

In the women's section, Margaret Mahohoma from Zimbabwe crossed the finish line first in 1:27:48, followed by veteran Sarah Mahlangu in 1:32:06 and Koeca Jennifer from Kenya in third position.

Takalani Nthulane registered a comfortable 40min: 28sec victory in the 10km road race in the women's section at the same venue. Second was Thembelihle Selela of ADT Athletic Club in 43:28

Men's results (10km): 1 Zongamele Dyubeni (32:17); 2 Lucky Mohale (32:18); 3 Ntombeka Mtintso (32:20).
