Church leaders and government officials gathered in Pimville, Soweto, at the weekend to find a way to combat crime.

Pastor Bongani Zwane of Grace Bible Church said the church was the hope of the world.

"Churches usher light into the world which is dark because of crime, but it is time for the church to take its rightful place and help fight crime in our communities," he said.

Zwane said the church condemned crime of whatever nature.

"We work with convicted criminals to help them find a way of living harmoniously with people in society," he said.

The premier of Gauteng, Paul Mashatile, said crime was unacceptable because people had fought for democracy but were unable to enjoy it.

"We want to make sure the people enjoy their freedom. Our democracy is too young to be taken over by criminals," he said.

Mashaile said communities should take charge and help fight the criminals.

"The government is happy to see people helping to tackle crime. Just know that you have the full support of the government," he said.

Gauteng MEC for community safety Firoz Cachalia rubbished reports that the government was only acting on crime as part of next year's election campaign strategy.

"As the ruling party we have a mandate to fight crime until the last day in office. That was what we were elected to do," he said.
