A fatal accident has claimed the life of a man who was riding a bicycle outside Polokwane in Limpopo.

The unidentified man was riding along Nelson Mandela Drive near Madiba Park on Saturday night.

Police and rescue personnel said the cyclist had a right of way to cross the intersection from Luthuli Park en route to Madiba Park when he was hit by a speeding Chevrolet Optra. He died instantly.

The driver of the car was described by police as "extremely drunk".

Seshego police spokesman Mothemane Malefo confirmed that a 34-year-old man was arrested and charged with drunk driving and culpable homicide.

The suspect will appear in the Seshego magistrate's court today.

The suspect was allegedly travelling with two passengers who, eyewitnesses said, got out of the car and disappeared with a cooler box believed to be filled with beers.

The police have appealed to members of the public to assist them in identifying the deceased cyclist.
