Soccer legend Jomo Sono has been invited by Fifa to be one of the guests in Zurich on January 12 for an announcement of the World Player of the Year Gala.
On that day, the outspoken Sono will be in Switzerland for a meeting of the Fifa technical and development subcommittee.
Other Africans in that committee are Zambia's Kalusha Bwalya and Nigeria's Amos Adamu, who happens to be the deputy convenor.
"I'm humbled to serve Fifa in two different subcommittees," said Sono yesterday, who has been appointed a member of the new Fifa committee for club football.
The committee will hold its first meeting in Tokyo, Japan, on December 18 where the "six plus five" quota system will also be discussed.
The system is fighting for the use of six home-grown players and a maximum of five foreigners by clubs globally so that the national teams can also benefit.
"I'm grateful to Fifa for recognising my involvement in football in South Africa and the contribution I made to the sport throughout the continent."
Sono is also credited with developing and giving international exposure to players from other African countries like Benjani Mwaruwari, Essau Kanyenda and Kennedy Nagoli.
Locally, he has unearthed players like Phil Masinga, Mark Fish, Arthur Zwane, Thomas Madigage, August Makalakalane, Pitso Mosimane and Andrew Rabutla.
The appointment of Sono to the new committee was confirmed in a letter sent to him by Jerome Valcke, Fifa general secretary.
Other South Africans serving in various Fifa subcommittees include Irvin Khoza, Molefi Oliphant, Danny Jordaan, Victor Ramathesele, Raymond Hack and Anastasia Tsichlas.
