The noose is tightening around the necks of motorists who break the law, with as many as 300 arrested in KwaZulu-Natal since the holiday season kicked in at the weekend.

KwaZulu-Natal safety and security spokesman Nonkululeko Mbatha said roadblocks were set up in key areas of the province.

Arrive Alive (AA) spokesman Ntau Letebele said: "We are going to inconvenience people in order to succeed."

Announcing measures AA would be taking to ensure road safety and minimise accidents during the festive season, Letebele said the aim would be to nail irresponsible road users.

Letebele said a disturbing 1419 people died on the roads between December 1 last year and January 6.

National Department of Transport spokesman Collen Msibi said the traffic flow was at present normal but was expected to increase by the weekend when more people go away on holiday.
