Veteran Umkhonto we Sizwe commander and former SANDF major-general, Peter Lesego Tshikare, is no more.
He died at his Walkerville home in the Vaal this week after a long illness.
Born in Johannesburg on November 23 1933, Comrade Peter Boroko, as he was known, joined MK in 1963.
A contemporary of the late Joe Modise and Alfred Nzo, he left South Africa and began his initial military training at Odessa in the then USSR.
In 1966 he completed his security and intelligence studies in the USSR and returned to Tanzania.
In 1970 he completed an advanced course in security and intelligence in Moscow.
In late 1976 he was posted to Angola to negotiate with the Angolan government and establish MK camps there.
He returned to Lusaka the following year as chief of intelligence for South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland and Lesotho.
In 1982 he was appointed deputy chief of intelligence. He completed a diplomatic course in the then German Democratic Republic in 1989 before serving as chief representative of the ANC in Egypt until 1992.
He returned to South Africa in 1993 after 32 years in exile. In 1994 he was made a major-general and served in military intelligence in the SANDF until retirement in 1998.
He was appointed director of Dewina Africa in 1998 and director at Armscor the following year.
He will be buried at Jakobskop Cemetery tomorrow. The service will be held at his home at 416 Versveld Road at Walkers Fruit Farm in Walkerville from 9.30am.
