Former head of the department of local government and housing, Sam Rampedi, has rejected an offer by Premier Sello Moloto to extend his contract in favour of opportunities in the business world.
Rampedi had his contract extended for a further three years by Moloto after it ended last week.
But, he turned the offer down, saying he wanted to pursue business interests.
Rampedi earned the title of sex pest after he was successfully sued for R90000 by a female colleague. The woman had accused him of sexually harassing her.
Rampedi was seen as a saviour after he turned the provincial department's fortunes around during his tenure.
From about June, Rampedi had been seconded to the Eastern Cape housing department to help implement a turn-around strategy and finalise housing projects.
Rampedi said it was never his intention to work in government after his contract expired.
"I was contracted to head the Limpopo department of local government and housing until November 30. I had no intention of working for the government beyond this date," he said.
"For me working in government was a calling. I appreciate the confidence Premier Moloto showed in me but I do not want to overstay my welcome."
The ANC youth league, which had demanded Rampedi's dismissal after the sexual harassment scandal, yesterday welcomed his decision to quit.
