The Department of Correctional Services and former Safa boss Zola Dunywa have embarked on a joint soccer project to promote the 2009 Confederations Cup in prisons.
The legacy project of the Local Organising Committee is supporting this project, which will see inmates from various centres featuring in soccer competitions.
Ngconde Balfour, the minister of correctional services, will launch the project at Leeuwkop Correctional Centre in Johannesburg tomorrow.
Dunywa was full of praise for Balfour's department for coming on board to support the programme. He has been working on the programme at various prisons in the country.
"We all know that there are various big soccer names for teams in our prisons like Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Lamontville Golden Arrows and Mamelodi Sundowns," he said.
"I have been working with various people to help the inmates get equipment to enable them to play soccer in line with the rules and regulations of Fifa.
"There will be an annual awards giving ceremony on Saturday at Leeuwkop where the Lamontville Golden Arrows will be crowned champions.
"I have spoken to Mato Madlala [of Premiership side Golden Arrows], and she will be joining us on Saturday with Kagisho Dikgacoi and coach Manqoba Mnqithi.
"Madlala is also bringing two sets of jerseys, Doctor Khumalo has also promised to get us jerseys from Kaizer Chiefs.
"We are also hoping to get something from Orlando Pirates. Sport Trust will also be donating 10 sets of soccer kit.
"Soccer is big in our prisons, the brothers and sisters are up to date with the development in the Premiership and First Division."
Turning to the Confederations Cup - which takes place next year - for prisons, Dunywa said champions of the various prisons will play against each other.
"The winners will adopt the names of countries participating in the 2009 Confederations Cup, the aim is to promote the tournament and the 2010 World Cup."
Fezile Sipamla of the department said some of the soccer legends will attend the event to do motivational talks for the inmates.
